e39 540i m sport pricing these days?
I'm looking to get into a 01-03 540i M sport in manual. Just wondering what you guys think these are worth these days? I've seen a huge price variance between 6,500 and like 13,000.
What do you think say an 01 silver with black leather and 180k is worth in good shape v.s. say an 03 with 140k.
Also if any of you have some silver on black ones for sale or know of anyone selling please pm me.
Thanks

I know they are pretty rare for one, but that could be saying a lot of owners hold onto them. I'd say the prices in the 13K is high, but then again a rare bird is hard to find.

They seem to be all over as you say.
Some enthusiasts think that their well maintained M sports are worth their weight in gold, then you have the ones that were owned by random people who just drove them and didn't go beyond basic maintenance that are selling them for much more reasonable/cheap(ish) price.
Neither group is wrong.
Focus on the car, the condition, the seller and then look at the price which is relative to the rest of the car.
Paying a grand or two more for a well sorted one is worth more than saving a grand or two to spend it in a while.

Keep in mind that the so called Msport is an 2003 US only model, a lot of so called "M sport" here don't even have the bumpers and M-par, so be careful of ads that say they are true M sport, make sure you get one with proper bumpers and steering wheel.

There's technically 2 versions, the sport package with tri-spoke steering wheel and sport package like the 97-99 cars, then 2000 on they are called M-sport package that the aero kit can be chosen or not, then the so called 2003 540i M-sport actually has M-tech 2 suspension which carries different part number.

So you are saying my Canadian 02 540ia with M steering, M moldings, M bumpers, M rims, sport seats, M door sills and black roof liner did not exist!?
Or is that a Sport package too...

I've been trying to understand this as well. I also have a 2002 (seems to be the same as Eurostyle's but mine is a stick). From what I gather, in the US they only got this car in 2003. But, in Canada we got it in other years - 2002 and perhaps 2001.
But, are the Canadian 2002 (and 2001?) cars the same as the 'special' 2003 ones?

All M sports 01-03 came with the seats, steering wheel, plethora of M badges inside and on the trim and front and rear bumpers as well as lower/firmer ride and style 66 wheels (unless other wheels are ordered by owner at time of purchase).
I could be wrong, but I do also recall reading that all 03 540i's were M sport in BMW's last bid to sell as many as they could by offering the Msport as a regular option. I am going to try and dig up the info on that to verify... either that, or I am thinking of the e60 550i's.

For 03, I believe that the 540 sticks were all M-Sports. I don't think that the auto's were - although it was an option.

I know this is kind of a useless comment ITT, but I'll say it anyway: If I was in the market for an E39 M-sport, I'd be looking for Imola red and only Imola red. Something about that colour with the M bumpers and M pars that really brought the whole thing together for me. I used to drool over them constantly when they were newer...

I just bought a 2003 540i/6speed and I can tell you that I do not have the M version although I have the M Steering , Shift knob, and M-Sport suspension.
A black headliner, M-Tech suspension, M-Tech Rims, M door sills are among the things I am missing which is the indication of a true M.
Having said that, I read somewhere that Canada got 2 M packages (M-Sport & M-Executive) where as the states just for the M-Tech.
So maybe I have the M sport, I just think that the car was ordered with M parts.
