congrats on the new ride too. Myself I also ended upgrading to a Jeep SUV mainly due to the price of gas (premium). I still kept the e36 for the joyfull summer ride !!!

nice you kept the beastor!!
and ^^ upgrading a to a new car just because the price of gas makes no sense financially.
any gas savings will be heavily offset by the cost of the vehicle(mainly), insurance etc

Not enough info to say that - depends on usage and fuel economy delta. I know it was certainly cheaper to buy a slightly used TDI than keep commuting in the M3.

well the gas savings are paying for half the payment on the car. Also I do put a lot of mileage on my vehicles so maintenance was starting to increase in the BMW which dates back to March 1992. I only put premium gas on the beast so that was like 80 to 90 bucks to fill it every week at todays prices. New Jeep is a Patriot V4 engine. No balls compared to the BMW but big in space and cheap on gas (45 bucks to fill same mileage as the BMW - 500km +/-). I work construction and I am on the field all the time so for a while the BMW was like a 4x4 off road vehicle for me. I can confirm that the Germans built a solid bullet proof
Insurance is a little higher 125 for Jeep and 85 for BMW but then again there is warranty on the Jeep for about 5 years so no big maintenance during that period.
Happy with the decisison but Ill never get rid of the e36. That sucker is just too much fun to drive and will be driven until it dies !! or I find the money for a M5 !!!!

How long has KIA been boosting cars for? I'd be worried about reliability on such a big step from NA cars to boosted. I know Mazda has been boosting cars since the first speed3 was made (early 2000ish).

Mazda has been running turbochargers since the mid 80's.

It would take a while for any payback.. provided you kept the m3 insured.
its usually cheaper just to suck it and keep running your car. unless of course its got land rover maintenance qualities
I looked into a cheaper mode of transport and after considering everything it would take a good while for any payback(many yrs)
Really for people like us a "beater" or second car is to keep the wear n tear and mileage down on our second car because we like cars. Not necessarily because it makes the most sense financially.

The TDI saves nearly $300/month in fuel at current prices, and hasn't really dropped in value since I purchased it two years ago. Selling the M3 and buying the TDI put me ahead $22k over 5 years. In just three years I'm ahead $12k. I paid about the same for the TDI that I got for the M3, so purchase price was effectively 0.

Kia and Hyundai definately are in the game. I don't know how reliable they are, but they are coming out with some nice designs! I love the look of the optima! That is a gorgeous car!
