Another piece added to the complex enigma, wrapped in a puzzle, wrapped in too many gaskets that is the M42.

Yeah e30's weren't cheap. My dad had an 84 318i auto, no power anything, no a/c, on steelies with cloth interior. The sticker price on that thing was something close to $40k Canadian. (I may be exaggerating a little, but not much)
I thought the mpower article was the best of those three above. Although the m3 vs cosworth was also good.
