Remember when I smashed my oil pan back in 2010?
Well I bottomed out hard enough that both inserts have a 3-4" long kink up the length of the body
They are the short konis that come with the GC kit.
I'll take a pic and post it when I swap them in the spring.
Damn, that must have been a hard hit. Any chance you know the part number of the shock inserts you ordered? I am wondering if it is the same one I am planning to get for the '02.

Haha, duh, figures they'd have their own part number. I wonder if they just use an off the shelf shock and rebadge it, or if they actually have them custom valved.

According to the guy at GC they buy them custom valved directly from Koni in Holland. The guy said shocks are valved to work for a certain range of spring rates (so in other words it could be better if you valved specifically for you spring rates). I don't know how much your spring rates need to change before the part number on the shock will change (if at all)
For the E30, Ground control uses Corrado G60 struts and revalves them.
I think the original P/N is 8641-1198-Sport
Do you know if they just scratch out the VW part number, and punch the GC number beside it or something? Maybe Steve can comment when he takes his out, I am curious to find out about it.
It's always puzzled me for years why the Corrado shock is so popular in the E30 world, when E30s have always had the IX shock available. Right size (albeit a bit short, but thats what the plan was anyways), proper diameter, correct gland nut to screw it into the strut housing (at least for the Bilstein shock), and probably a decent valving characteristic for a near-same weighted car. FWIW, the IX Koni is 8641-1144Sport. I'd planned to put this into the '02, but the Koni dealer I dealt with forwarded me the email he sent to Koni NA, and he suggested going with a 8610 series shock instead because of the spring rate I was planning to run. If I ever build up another E30, I would definitely go with 8610s or 8611 Series shocks for a good budget setup. I'd definitely feel more confident with those than using an off-the-shelf shock meant for a FWD car
On another note, my rear Konis are in! Just need to go pick them up!

I received my replacement shocks a week ago. There's no numbers punched into the body of the shock, there's a sticker on it with the p/n 8641-1547SPGC. And as far as I can tell the sticker isn't covering a stamping on the body of the shock.

Hmm... thats too bad. I guess that is one good thing with Bilstein is they punch a new set of numbers in each time it gets sent back for work/revalving/etc. Too bad for Konis... You could slap another sticker on it, and nobody would be the wiser (unless you have a shock dyno handy!)
Anyways... I got my Koni rears today!! They look sooo nice. I can't wait to put them in!
I've heard with the IX inserts you need to insert a piece of pipe to make up for the extra length in the strut housing. I don't know where in the housing it would go, or how long though.

The piece of pipe sits in the bottom. The length required will be the body length of the stock shock minus the body length of the iX shock.
I'm going to put my bilstein IX shocks up for sale shortly if anyone is interested. Making an order for the Koni fronts as soon as I get the drawings to compare some measurements
Edit.I had to reword this because it doesn't really make sense. FWIW, If I were to put the IX shocks into E30 struts, I would cut down the housings as much as possible to gain as much bump travel as possible. Putting them into stock housings with a spacer won't really gain much. It will just end up bottoming out just like stock length inserts. Although I can't remember the lengths offhand, but if anything is gained, just the droop becomes shorter.
I am now convinced Sparco seats are tanks. I thought my current Sparco was heavy, but I think this one takes the cake. However, on the plus side they are sturdy as hell, and like I've mentioned before, I like overbuilt!
