steering noise

when i turn the steering wheel after i start the car in the cold i hear a rattling noise but after driving a few minutes and the car is warmed up the noise is gone. can anyone tell me what that is or if its normal on 97 e39 540

Not normal, but very common on all cars when cold and something is on its way out (like PS pump), i suggest change the fluide ASAP and use an additive (Lukas is VERY good from my experience!)

Is this still happening? The PS pump may not be easily accessible but put a screwdriver to it and listen if you can. Actually do this to the alternator as well and see if it's making any funny noises.

Lukas additive is very thick imo..i had a leaky power steering system and it fixed it LOl

but VERY VERY heavy steering in winter times...

i used to be able to tell how cold it is outside depending on my steering feeling in the morning LOL

reservoir was low so i added some atf, most of the noise went away. comes up faintly every now and again on cold days
