BMW recalling E46 3 Series models over faulty tail lights

Summary:
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2002-2005 325I, 325XI, 330I, AND 330XI VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 1, 2001, THROUGH MARCH 1, 2005. OVER TIME, RESISTANCE IN THE ELECTRICAL CONTACTS MAY CAUSE ONE OR MORE REAR LAMP FUNCTIONS (TAIL LIGHT, BRAKE LIGHT, AND/OR TURN-SIGNAL), WITHIN THE VEHICLE'S BODY PANEL, TO STOP WORKING.

Consequence:
INTERMITTENT LIGHT OPERATION REDUCES THE ABILITY TO WARN OTHER MOTORISTS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS. THIS COULD CAUSE A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.

Remedy:
BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING OCTOBER 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND SERVICES AT 1-800-525-7417.

If that's an issue with the oem tails what about the ones who have upgraded to led tails? can anyone tell from the short problem description of whether the issue is in the factory connectors or oem lamp assembly???

Tail light assembly failure caused by overheating of the electrical pin, as fas as i know.

Very common problem with e46; my buddy did a tonne of these when they were rampant. Apparently it is the circuitry in the tail light panel that shorts and the bulbs stop working properly. new backing is required and also a repair.
It has an over heating issue.

My E46 front corners melted last summer, had to replace with new sockets and lense assembly. Sounds similar but my issue was front corner only so far.

this happened to my 330i 2 years ago. Had to replace both tail light boards, they were around $200 a piece or something, don't remember the exact cost.

If you still have the receipt, you can try claiming it from BMW...
I have this intermittent issue, so its good that BMW is doing
the recall on this issue.. i wonder what prompted this for its a known issue from E46 owners.....

I thought there was also a previous TSB, in which the tails weren't grounding properly, and a "fix" available. (basically adding a thicker negative ground wire).

Edit: nevermind, I see they mention this in the article:
"Previously, BMW issued a technical service bulletin concerning a certain eight-pin connector which would overheat and melt under extreme electrical load. BMW dealers corrected the issue by adding additional grounding to the circuit. It's unclear whether this remedy will also be applied to the recall."

Someone obviously blew the lid off this case in order to generate such publicity. they also don't need the negative press. BMW is not keen on recalls unless someone has blown the whistle. There is usually lengthy investigation before the come out with such an announcement. I know when I worked for a dealer the e46 M3 cars were having knocking engines at 10-20k. At first they thought it was neglect so the customers engine would sit in the bay of the shop for weeks. Finally new motors arrived for a few customers and the old engines were recrated and sent back to head office for inspection. After this they found out it was a faulty oil delivery system and made a batch of new oil pumps and called everyone back in with their M3's to get them changed before they had to swallow engine replacements. Cheaper to change pumps then replace engine. so it saved them tonnes of money.

I received this recall notice late Nov 2011 and car is in Maranello today,
according to SA, they will replace the wiring especially the gounding cable...

This happens on e36's too. I cleaned out the electrical contacts (sandpaper), this solved my problem.

The real sad part is they included these models for rear tails and not the front HID light cars that have the same issues as ones they covered. Guess that would cost too much!

When you have an HID issue it is either an expensive bulb or ignitor/control module...sucks.
