Advice Needed for BMW M5 purchase
Hey Folks, I'm new here - I was sent over from Rennlist as I'm thinking of getting an E60 M5 (2006).
Any advice on cost of ownership for maintenance and repairs? Are they reliable as a daily driver?
Am I going to regret buying one out of warranty?
Thanks,
James

I got my 2006 M5 last May. So far a few minor things, but very reliable. Its is a solid car. My advise would be to search hard and find a reliable mechanic who knows their M5s. I would also suggest to take your prospective purchase to a shop and have things looked over. Anyone one or place selling a good used M5 will not have issue with this, and if they do stay clear.
Good luck and enjoy the car, I thank my stars every day I drive it. They are awesome machines.
Stay clear of one that has any mods, unless done correctly they can ruin an otherwise perfect car.

Eurostyle is correct, as with any high end car like an M5, there are certainly no cheap repairs. Even regular maintenance cost a little more than usual. Also keep in mind that this is even worse for other cars in the same category. You need to expect a certain increase in costs when owning a car like this for sure.
As far as regretting the purcahse without warranty, do your homework and find a good place to have it maintained and repaired and that is all you can do. Used cars come with risk, I do not think there is any more risk with an M5, and in fact I think less risk if you researh and find a good one.

One thing to help you get a *more* reliable e60, is to stay away from the SMG!

Thanks everyone.
I actually had a deposit on one a couple weeks ago. 06, 70,000kms, US car, dolphin grey and extended CoverageOne warranty for about 2 more years.
The dealer disclosed that there was a small parking lot fender bender... I asked for some paperwork and after some digging, learned that the repair came to $31,000!!!! Fender bender my ass!
I went to BMW and they said that $31k does not mean frame damage and those totals add up quickly... so, back to the dealership - asked them for a parts list for the build and they delayed for a week.... then could not produce one. So I got my deposit back and peeled towards the exit in the 911!
Now my search has stalled a bit but I'm on Autotrader once a week peaking around.

I looked at it... It's awesome, and it's exactly what I'm looking for. Too rich for my blood though with a 911 and an Audi in my garage. My budget is high $30s.
Thanks for sharing in any case. Beautiful car.

My 06 M5 was pretty solid, couple little things.
My M6 that I have know gave me SMG issues.
The awesome thing is when it happens it's without any warning at all!
Mine was the SMG pump and lines and throw out, also I lost an ionic sensor that was pretty awesome as well
.
Really really look into the service history. See if it had the Pump changed, there was some sort of free service or recall for the pumps.

Thanks - some really good info here. I'll definitely have to pay close attention if I test drive one of these.
