obviously e46 is closer to e36 than e90.
early model e46 m3's had problems....something later fixed err bandaid'd with the thicker 10w60 oil. they dont just self destruct.
motors that were dealer serviced, never had the bearing failure, this was do BMW actually swaping out the motors without the customers knowing.
This kind of recal also happened on the M5 once, they found out that a small number of motors had not had the head bolts tourqued, but could not pin point which ones had these motors, so all cars had the motors changed.
Most people would never know these motors were changed out, they weere just told there was a minor recall service being done
