Buying a 2002

My buddy is in the market for an 02. I do not know too much about these cars and I am going along to look at a few with him. I know they are very old so there are many obvious things to look for as major issues, but are there any specific issues that arise with these cars that are signs to steer away from purchasing it?

Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

They are unibody so structural rust is a killer. Especially bad areas are the rear strut towers(viewable through the trunk), frame rails, drivers floor, front fenders, rear subframe mounting points and rockers. Unless you are a sadist or a bodyman avoid cars with some combination of these issues, especially rear shock towers. Mechanicals can be fixed, but if the body is crap, you are in real deep. Take your magnet, flashlight and screwdriver. Spend some time on www.2002faq.com as well.

Ya i figured most of what to look for is body related. But what is the reason to bring a magnet?

magnet will detect body filler. if the thing sticks you've got good metal, if not.... bondo

You and your friend should come to Tedfest in Oakville on July 2nd.
There were 6 or 7 02's there last year,could be more this year.
Give you a chance to see some up close and talk to owners.
