2012 BMW 1-Series Officially Revealed with 4-Cylinder Engine Range

2012 BMW 1-Series
It looks like all the images of the new BMW 1-Series were the real deal and the info was spot-on as well, so the Bavarian carmaker had no choice but to officially reveal the new 1er head of schedule. The company must have had big plans for the reveal, wanting to sell its new product as a cool, trendy alternative to the Golf, but with the leaked pictures making the rounds on the internet there wasn’t even time for an internet broadcast or a celebratory event.

With everything about the BMW 1-Series now known, it’s time for us to go over the details with a fine comb, searching for stuff we might have otherwise missed. The new model that will arrive at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show will be dramatically different from the Bangle-era design it replaces.

The 1-Series is actually based on the platform of the 3-Series and it has grown a lot bigger, offering improved cabin and boot space, the two aspects that made the old generation so dreaded by hatchback fans.

The wider face seems to be pulled strait of the 7-Series, with the larger eyes incorporating the same sort of lines as BMW’s latest concepts. Inside, it still looks like a car made in Bavaria, but engineers have increased the level of standard features.

Under that sculpted bonnet, BMW has decided to launch the 2012 1-Series exclusively with four-cyinder engines. The leaked info on the engine range was all true, an he five-door hatchback is available with a pair of 1.6-liter gasoline engines with direct injection that offer 136 hp on the 116i and 170 hp in the case of the 118i. This must be the first time that a BMW with “18” in its name sounded attractive. The diesel family is all about the 2.0-liter engine that offers between 116 and 186 hp in the 120d.

As was the case with the X1 and Z4, the range topping model will come in the form of the 128iS that is expected to receive a 245 hp 2.0-liter turbocharged engine instead of a naturally aspirated straight-six.

All engines come mated to either a six-speed manual or an optional eight-speed auto from ZF, while a number of fuel-saving technologies like start-stop and regenerative braking.

All the specs are for the European version of the car, as this is the market where the 1-Series will be first made available, but the to-of-the-range examples could be introduced Stateside. At the moment, no pricing information is officially available, but we expect the listing to be similar to the current generation.

Here is a list of model versions announced (European model range):
