Transmission fluid flush and change

Hey guys I have been contemplating on doing a transmission fluid change because my gears are starting to become a little rough. I don't know if its because its due for a service or what. But lately I have also been hearing a whining noise come from the gearbox area after i installed a short shifter kit. I don't believe the short shifter kit has anything to do with this. But i thought i should throw that in. I'm thinking that it could be one of 3 things.
1) the transmission fluid is getting old.
2) the syncros are starting to eff up
3) It could be the driveshaft making that whinning noise. After 2nd gear the whinning noise goes away.

Now im curious. Some people have been telling me that if i change the fluid it could possibly make all of this worse. Other people have been telling me not to worry about it and go head and do the fluid change. Id rather make sure and get someone else's input than me having to buy a new transmission.

Im considering getting a transmission flush and then putting in the new redline atf d4 synthetic oil. Will this be any better?

Transmission is a 5spd from a 1997 m3

if still on the oem fluid id put the new fluid in.

auto trans are typically worse off to flush because they have way more seals that could be hanging on for dear life and with a fluid flush its causes them to not work as well anymore.


what kind of whining? some noise is normal. its a machine with gears n sh*t

I needto do the same thing for my 91 318i E30, manual 5 spd.
Having some whining sound, and it gradually gets louder when in neutral and going down the hill.
need to make sure what fluid to use. Is it also ATF d4?

Manly trans dont need fluid change unless it leaked out. And im not talking about lifetime fluid on Girly trannies lol. That's another ball of wax

So it wouldnt hurt it, if i just drained it and filled it back up
