317K km on my 318, bought it with 298k.

I used to look away from high milage but realized a car only made it that far because it was taken care of.

Just hit 360,000km today. Take care of the car and it'll take care of you.
Of course there are some things that will go as your mileage goes up outside of regular maintenance. I.e plastic neck for the rad, might as well get an aluminum one, waterpump, thermostat, alternator can crap out at anypoint in time if it has not been replaced, etc.
All of the above either happened to me last summer or I got to it before it went.

Just make sure you have documentation of maintenance records and you should be good.

As of tonight, I'm at 199,9XXkm. It runs flawlessly. It's all in how the car was maintained. Mine was maintained well before I bought it (50k ago), and even better now. I plan on putting another 400k on it.

I was thinking about selling my 318Ti to buy a new VW GTI... Then I though : It will be waaay cheaper to fix everything on the Bimmer (rust, new M3 front lip, new gloss black paint and new head-tail lights)

It has 135000km and here are the problems I had/have :

-Engine block broke (other proprietary..driving like an ass)
-Tiny oil leakage (fixed : oil pan nut (lost the washer..))
-clutch bearing (being fixed.. The clutch is still the original and It's been through drag and rough driving!)
-Alternator (being fixed)

I think that's about it! Nothing to be afraid of, unless you always shift at cutoffs, things like that

there's a guy on bimmerforums who has an e36 with 600k miles. these things last you just need to make sure they are maintained properly.

RUST!! Don't believe anything you hear about "no rust" - check the rockers and the strut mounts - I have Rust on the rockers, hood and quarter wheel well area. When I went to see mine I made a list of things to check - power windows, heater controls, sunroof mechanisms, lights, steering, brakes etc and electricals like seat heaters

Be thorough and don't be anxious to buy - there are plenty of E36 cars around so don't just jump on the first one
