Sucks to hear about the luck. To get rid of the sludge in the engine, best thing is to take the car on a couple nice long drives during the week and get it warmed up and burn off that sludge. I get the same since my office is 20minutes from home. At least once a week I take a drive out to scarborough from west oakville to burn off the excess sludge (4th gear at 120km/h works great).

500 bucks wow. must be more involved than our dodges lol. Also to help burn away sludge a Hot Oil flush works well. Ive used Amsoil hot oil flush on some vehicles before. Just pour it into your oil before doing an oil change. let ur vehicle idle for 10-15 mins or drive for a little while. then drain your oil. all its really doing help break down the sludge alot quicker. just an idea

Repling late but just had the exact problem.
Your crankcase vent valve freezes and builds up pressure in the engine cuasing the VC gasket to blow. You have to replace both.
I did the job myslef and I consider myself a pretty decent DIYer, but I will never EVER do this install myself again. The area is tight and if you get the cold weather version, even tighter.
Save the headache, go to Rocco - I know next time I will.

Well let me revise my statement it's actualy about 1L per 1000km I let the car sit for a couple of hours and the level went up to half way about 1/2L at 500km but its a 01 I still think it's too much I did change the ccv and vc gasket and changed to a German make of oil 5w30 synthetic Don't know what to do next

Talking about this thread the other day, guess what happens to me on the way to see George at Simply Cars yesturday, POOF ... pressure build up and cracked the valve gasket too ... to think all I was going for was the 330 front brake swap with new pads and rotors all around. This is the mess today ....
Got a new gasket and new CCV installed plus a full engine clean now since the sludge went everywhere. BMW needs to get a better design on this and I have the cold weather package too. Can't complain, first real problem for a car with 100,000km on it.
but on a happier note, I got 330i fronts on my 325i E46 now ...

That's what I've been doing but it's insane, my friend has a 98. 540 and he doesnt even go through 1L every oil change (5000 k) and he needs to do his vc gaskets and he's over 200,000 k

Driving a BMW is associated with a love/hate relationship! As much as you love them, it is times like these when you hate them! lol...
