Powder Coat Gas Tank?

Hey guys,

working on a gas tank swap this winter. Just wanted to see if you think powder coating it would be worth it... it already seems to have some sort of primer on it, I think also powder coated... just wondering if its worth giving it another shot of paint for protection.

Also, I was reading some stuff on gas tank sealing... should it be done as a layer of protection for the inside? Oh and where do you find this stuff?

Anyhow, here`s a picture of it...

let me know what you think,...

with this...

Used part off an `84 325e... has a film of rust on the inside, wondering how to clean it out and refinish it... or maybe just bite the bullet and get a new one...

I just took 2-3 cans of crappytire rubberized undercoating to a new tank I had. I never installed it just ended up selling it.

What's the cost of powercoating the tank worth? Don't think you'd get your investment out of it especially if it's not going to be seen. I'd go with the other poster's comment and spray it out with rubberized coating.

decide yet on the powder coating? I have a guy that does sandblasting and powdercoating for me if you need a number.

Saw your plans for 2011 in the other thread. Ambitious! A red e30 with tucked diving boards and roof rack passes me everyday on the way to and from work.

I think we're talking about the same guy... can't remember the guys name, I have his card at home... but he did my H&R springs, pretty cheap too... I think it was only 20$ or so... that's kind of what gave me the idea... and I got them sand blasted for a round of coffee's at the shop my aunt works at .

And yeah, pretty ambitious cause I've had this workplan for a long time... I'm finally getting a workshop so I can do it all sometime in the near future, as it stands right now, I got my 89' 325i in storage (where my shop will be), my good e30 shivering outside in this winter and my track rat 85' 325e taken appart in my home garage... I simply just don't have the room... hopefully looking into buying a house soon with a garage big enough for this work...

I was thinking about the tucked bumpers... since these ones are scratched. I also have a set of plastic bumpers, but I'd have to get rid of my IS lip to put those on... not sure if I want to do that... so they'e more then likely going to go on the track car.

Anyhow, yeah, ambitious since the year 2000 (when I bought the car )

Fuel Filler tube and tank sealing?

hey, guys bumping this to see if anyone has any opinion on gas tank sealing I was thinking of this product

http://www.kbs-coatings.com/Tank-Sealers_c_7-1-0.html

I have 3 other used gas tanks that can probably use it, one definitely on my buddies DD that currently leaks from the seam. but is it worth doing that to a new tank as a form of protection?

Also, is that filler tube good enough, price of a new one is close to 200$ unless someone knows a good spot for new parts. The film of rust concerns me, as I will pretty much have a completely new fuel system except for this part (new pump, new tank, new filter etc..)

anyhow, let me know

Check with alexgoesracing on ebay. He breaks down e30s all the time and I got a filler neck cheap from him this past year, rust free.

http://shop.ebay.ca/alexgoesracing/m.html

I replaced my rusty tank with a new aftermarket one. I would never powdercoat a tank, i'd get it epoxy coated. There are specific processes for epoxy coating tanks and shops that specialize in it.

Funny you should mention him...

I know him personally I'll give him a call, see if he's got anything. I've seen most of his inventory, don't recall seeing one, but maybe he just never brought it out or something. I got a new Master clutch cylinder from him, my buddy got several windows off of him etc. and just to re-assure others, he's pretty cool and trust worthy guy to buy parts off... I've actually offloaded some of my parts to him

anyhow, thanks, I'll look into the epoxy paint, if not, then rubberized undercoating it is...
