bmw intervals are too long.

i do 10-11k with GC 0w30

as for above me, specific bmw engines require the 10w60. e46 m3 is one of them.

I use royal purple 5w40 and change it every 5000 km or 3 months whichever comes first. I'm really happy with the oil, the engine runs very smooth and quiet.

It is the oil that was made along side the S62/S54 motors by Castrol FOR those motors and is fully recommended for all season driving.

There have been many debates about other oils being able to be used in those S motors, but that is for another time.

Several reasons (for my S54 specifically)

-Higher revving motors = more heat. More heat = more expansion, hence looser tolerances for internal components like piston rings etc.. Thicker oil will not seep through those tolerances and burn during normal driving.

-Higher viscosity oils can with-stand high heat environments before breaking down

-Higher viscosity oils will not "walk" up the side of the pan during hard cornering forces, uncovering the pickup.

BMW recommends Mobil1 10W60 used on the S54 engine. From what I heard, if any other viscosity oil is used, the factory warranty could be voided. I'm sure they know what they're talking about. ///M stands for "much more money"... as in operating costs and maintenance.

My M20 is pretty loose... 10w40 winter, 20w50 summer. Castrol GTX. I also run Molyslip Oil Additive, it's great stuff!
