People often think that, but it's actually the opposite.
buying in the winter time means:
1. you get old stock (leftovers)
2. selection isn't as great (everyone is stocking up on winters)
3. rebates for summer tires often occur during the spring time.
4. if there are any problems with the tire, you won't know right away. (in the spring/summer you can bring it back and the company will rectify the problem immediately.)
so if you can wait, I would wait till spring.
