Fuel pump issue

i am in the middle of solving a power loss issue with my 97 328i by reading stuff off the web, so i went to diagnose the fuel pump as i have already replaced spark plugs, fuel filter, and air filter.
i checked the diy pictures, but when i opened the fuel pump casing, i came across a strange issue that i was really not prepared for. there was only a single hose connected to the fuel pump.
there was a second socket, however, but it was uncovered with plenty of dust and gunk in and around the fuel tank. i am not sure if its just a different type of fuel tank, or whether there is something wrong with it.
by looking at the hose, i cannot see a leak. what should i do?
