Building and registering your own trailer?

i think you just go to the license bureau and get a homemade permit for it.

Trailer laws are a joke, just go to the DMV and say you have a "home made" trailer, and they give you an ownership and plates!

No wonder why so many trailers get stolen!

So there isn't going to be some sort of inspector that'll come by and tell me it's not road worthy. I like the sound of that. Thanks so much.

BTW, have any of you built your own trailers? Any heads up on the topic? I know that some trailers are supposed to have breaks if they're 'x +' size.

I've built 4 trailers in the past few years. You go to the MTO say "I made a trailer" they will assign you a file # that serves as the VIN for the trailer. It's cheaper to register a home-built trailer then to transfer one into your name.

Rules for trailers are getting a bit tighter. I'm not sure if this is law yet, but I've heard that soon any trailer with 2 or more axles (or single axle with brakes) will have to be inspected/safetied ever year and more then likely inspections will be required annually for all trailers.

Right now, they don't even ask to see a picture of it.

Brakes aren't required, as far as I know, but are ideal when you are towing a heavy load. It also adds to your towing capacity. My car has a 2000lbs towing capacity, 3500lbs with trailer brakes.

The only rules I'm aware of regarding size are it can't be over a certain size, not sure of the exact dimensions maybe 9', and if it is over 80" you need lights in the middle of the rear of trailer.

Princess Auto has everything you need for trailer building; lights, couplers, springs, axles, tires, etc...

It is law even now, if the trailer is registered for commercial use, they have to be inspected every year...

The only thing I would be curious is how to determine the maximum weight that can be carried. Would that be based on the spring load without regard to how the frame of the trailer is constructed and reinforeced? Some of those trailers I see at Rona and HD look very basic but yet road worthy. If you're going to carry a vehicle I would build that thing solid and not cut corners.

So hockey, can I buy a flat bed trailer, tack weld walls on and call it a homemade trailer?

The walls seem really easy to do, I'm just worried about all the rest. My measuring skills suck balls and I dont know how good of a base i can build. I remember seeing a open bed trailer for like 150-200, I think buying that and putting on walls would be easiest.

One time I registered a trailer as home made just because I "accidentally" painted over the serial number and couldn't tell what it was. I even tried to clean the paint off with my angle grinder but that didn't help much so I repainted it and called it home-built.
