Things to look for in a E60 5er

I checked here:

but didn't find anything to look out for on 2004 530i's. I'm going to take a look at 2 this week.

To those that own em, can I get your opinion? Ive searched on the web and found really good perceptions on maintenance and seeing as its now a 6 year old car. All the initial kinks should be worked out and the only thing I'll be looking into is - I would assume - regular maintenance (oil change, brakes etc...)

i know one thing for a fact, it doesn't have an oil dip stick, i did service on one recently, took me 10 minutes to figure out that the oil level is shown onboard.

I'll just put it simply.
Most of the unreliability on the E60 surrounds the iDrive system and its buggyness. E60 are almost all associated with the i-drive and buggy software, which causes a myriad of problems from false warning lights to odd gearchange effects to faulty window operation etc..
The runflats are harsh and they suck, so get rid of them (if they are still on). Garbage tires, as are all runflats IMO. Electrical issues are main issues with window regulators, parking lights staying on too long, dead pixels on the screen, control system issues, etc etc. Too bad German cars don't have Japanese electrical components haha. Key is to keep on maintainence, make sure you do the waterpump when scheduled and do preventative maintainence. But it *should* be much more reliable than the unreliable E39. They are expensive on parts but they drive so well that it makes it worth it. Take it to an independent for repairs. A quick google search also confirms what I've said as well:

mine has been bulletproof, but its still under BMW warranty, only one issue that was covered, rain sensing wipers module failed ($800 part, 8 hours of labor apparently).

Daddy finally traded in his "bmw killer" G35 sedan for a same year BMW 5 series huh? or You've been putting a lot of time on the dealership's used inventory as you should do with the Lot Boy duties you do, lol... what a joke.

wow ... $1600 rain sensing module replacement (assuming $800 part + $800 labour) ... not sure if I'd ever consider E60 ... I don't think my E39 has been unreliable at all, at least my 3 years of ownership experience on a used E39 has been pretty fantastic. My biggest bill so far is my proactive replacement of the water pump / fan clutch / thermostat / radiator hoses which costed me no more than $500 with parts & labour included.

Of course I'd never go to dealers for services ...

I just got my 04 530i.. everything's great but problems with the static coming out of cd player/radio while playing. passengar airbag sensors are malfunctioning but bmw will fix it since it was a recall.

1st year E60 may still have some issues ... I bet 2005 and 2006 models are much more solid and problems free.

Just like any car, whether its E46, E39 or E60 or even E90 its all the same shit, only the face lifted versions are good.
