wont turn over...

i wired up the m50, and when i turn the ignition, the crank spins almost 1/4 circle then all i hear it tick tick tick tick tick tick tick....*smoke from the wires*

when i turn the crank in the front by hand, the starter gives it a good 1/4 spin.

any ideas?

that sounds like there isn't enough juice going to the starter if the solenoid just clicks after a 1/4 turn.

Smoke from the wires? Did you look for any burn / bare wires or connections?

all the connections are tight.

the fw is back on and the engine can rotate by hand.

hehe i think its a sign saying stop while you're ahead and put the m20 back in.

Do your starter and flywheel match? (ie M20 flywheel/M20 starter, M50 flywheel/M50 starter)

Just wondering if timing is an issue? also the distributor. Don't know much about the m50 but maybe it might spark something you didn't think of.

fw and starter (both off m20) do match, battery is fully charge.

and i highly doubt timing being an issue.

Give the starter a few taps with the hammer.

Are you sure you wired it up right?
The clicking starter usually means not enough juice of a start is gone.

UPDATE.

problem solved. engine runs....

PROBLEM: start stopped and ticked the night away. 1 ground wire in harness fried.

SOLUTION: apparently only 1 engine block ground isn't enough. so i wired up another on the starter side....and murder she wrote.

Good to hear. I love flooring my M20 when I'm just fooling around Oshawa. I bet that M50 would just rocket. Have you taken it for a little spin around the block as of yet?
