I wouldn't really look at anything other than a M Sport or M5. The rest of e39's look too dated/boring.

Are you kidding me? That's nuts I'm still hitting ~12-12.5 L/100 on highway. The 09 STi is doing lot worst though at 13-13.5. It's how I can justify the V8

Thats crazy! you must have an 80L plus 10 reserve, and its not $60 to fill?

There is no comparing the handling of a 530i sport to an m5, the m-suspension is no joke compared to any stock sport sus. I've driven all e39 models and unless your got alot of suspension mods the m5 will spank it in every way. You must really not know how to drive the m5.

That said the 530i sport is a great car and I almost bought one myself, I had a soft spot for an imola sport packaged one.

530i M is more reliable than a 540i M, they both have the same fuel economy, 540 being alot faster. To me a 530i seems slow, i think it's too heavy for that M54 motor. I'd get last year 540i (2003).

I can't speak about the 530i vs. 540i comparisons other than go drive one and you'll know...

I do know that the 540i is amazing on the track. It might be heavy but it turns AND pulls in tons of cars on the straights with no issues.

I love my E39. It hauls the family, has plenty of power for DD duty, takes to the track like nobodies business and still schleps the kids around the day after. If only mine had the UAS to make dropping the car seats in a little quicker...
