BMW problem, misfire?

So I was at my old work place (tech shop) earlier this evening to do a few things to my car. I had the owner of the shop take my car out to test it to see what sort of work it needs done to the suspension geometry. As he was leaving, he started revving the car like crazy (this is not a behaviour he portrays), tells me the car is stalling and gives me a "wtf" look. Anyway, I go to drive the car and yup, stalls on me too.

However, if I just start the car, 3/5 times it will idle fine until I give it gas, then it'll bog down and stall, or it just cranks over and dies out immediately. Under driving conditions, the exhaust note sounds a lot different, makes a popping sound every now and then, and the car shudders at low speeds, randomly loses power or lags in throttle response (about 3-5 tenths of a second), and stalls out every time the car comes to a stop unless I sit there and blip the throttle like crazy. I'm thinking it's a misfire issue as the CEL does come on and off randomly under load (driving).

I've ordered ignition wires so far. My spark plugs look okay but I'm thinking of replacing that too. Is there anything else I should consider to remedy the problem?

Yes, just about everything else thats on the engine! Could be several things, so a good diagnostic must be done before changing randome parts! Check ignition coils, sensors (cam, etc tec), vacume leaks, catalitic...

Managed to find the main cause of the "limp mode". There's a pretty sever crack in the rubber intake elbow, took car of that with some electrical tape just to try and stop as much air as possible from being drawn into the manifold, there's also a split at the end of the plumbing tube that goes to the airbox; taped that too.

Anyway, looking for the intake elbow and that one plumbing tube. The latter connects to the air box and to an outlet somewhere underneath the intake manifold. Car is a 1995 318i Sedan
