Friends dad is looking at one, what does anybody know about them?

There great .. I miss mine. Some may tell you to get a 02 or above but really I didnt have any problems with my car and sold it at 308K. It still ran better then some brand new American cars today.

There will always be common problems in every year every model. The only one I remember is the window regulator which never went in my car.

Is he specifically looking for an xi? You can get a 2007 328i with under 60k km's for about 7K more, and that will even have a warranty.

Love my 04 330Xi. From what I've read, I would thoughly check the front and rear subframe for any signs of wear. High failure points are drivers side front and rear I believe. The one big fix in the e46 in general was the improvement in the subframe on post-facelift models (mid 2001 production). Mine has 230,000 km, no issue and mine is lowered and stiffened and is driven hard!
