Tie Rod Replacement
Hi Everyone,
Just finishing off my steering work and replacing the outer tie rods.
One of them screwed onto the steering knuckle tight, but for some reason I can't tighten the other one. It just seems to rotate the entire ball joint.
Does this mean that the rod is broken? Why did one tighten right up, and the other will not tighten up much past hand tightening?
Any help is appreciated (I bought pretty good quality, life time warranty, so it's not because of the equipment)...

Put a jack under the ball joint, keep lifting till you just start to lift the entire car. (hear creaking noises)
You will be able to tighten the ball joint then.
Goodluck!

or use a channel locking plier and squeeze the joint while tightening.

Use the jack method. Much less chance of damaging something than with that plier solution.

are you talking about the tie rod end threading onto the inner part? or the balljoint into the strut? If you're talking about the end(#8 below) onto the inner(to make a #4), you will not use a jack, but use visegrips or a pipewrench to hold the inner while you thread the end on far enough that you can drive to get an alignment. If you can't tighten the nut on the balljoint(#9), use a jack as described above.

Cool diagram, thanks. Yes, it is #9 that is causing the issue. I will try the jack method and post tonight.

The diagram is from http://www.realoem.com
If you're working on a BMW you should really get familiar with that site, it's like the bible but without all the lies

Brent, it's funny how you got the damn things off without using the jack... usually the nut spins the ball joint when you try to undo that same nut.

It's been a while since I took them off, but if I remember right I think I may have just cut them off with my trusty $10 rotary tool from Canadian Tire...lol
