engine acting up

ok so heres the story

me driving on the 401 beside the airport cursing at 130km/h and then i wanted to pass another one of those slow drivers in the fast lane, so i gunned the car and while doing that i felt the car lag twice so am like hmmmm wth is that so stupid me gunned it again and heres what happened

a check engine light popped right away
the car started shacking as i pushed on the accelerator
it felt like i had like more than 2 miss-fires in the engine,

however so i pulled to the shoulder and popped the hood, felt the engine it was shacking really hard.

got in the car turned it off and on again and booom
it started running perfectly fine again.

it has been 24 hours since that lil incident, drove the car today again for over 50kms
it drove mint.

now the question is

what could it be?
should i be worried?
and since the car is running fine with no check engine how can i check for failures?

any help would be appreciated

Computer probably stored the CEL code. I'm not totally sure but do the stomp test if it's available on e36's or have the car scanned. That should tell you exactly what you're looking for or it will give you a good starting point.

I had the exact same thing happen to me on Monday morning...the only thing was that I was in my garage. I turned my car off and the car ran fine except for my check engine light. I got it scanned and cylinders 1 and 6 were misfiring. I replaced all 6 plugs and the air filter. I also checked the coils...

Sounds like a mis-fire. Get the code read.
Could be an ignition coil starting to act up.

I had the exact same problem but in my case the hose that goes underneath the boot next to MAF cracked and popped out, my engine would rev 1500 to 3000, shake and at the same time check engine light on prior to fix.
