my uncles turbo diesal jetta has over 300,000 kms on it. he commutes from oshawa to toronto 5 days a week since he bought it. Not sure on the year sorry.

I would go for a BMW over 1.8T. It is not cheap engine to keep up. You gotta do the T-belt. She may as well go for a bmw than. The 2.0L is a good choice.

A timing belt job on a 1.8T is peanuts... you can get it done for ~$400... that includes the WP.

Parts aren't expensive for the motor itself either.

For girls I only ever recommend boring Japanese appliance cars. Least amount of headaches down the road, I generally push towards a 2.5 Altima auto (3rd gen 2002-2006), big car, looks kinda flashy for a rolling washing machine, and dead reliable in my experience. YMMV.
