Seriously. Fram are horrible. The metal canister type have plastic bypass valves that end up leaking within about 1000km's and end up having all the oil bypass the filter. Great, coulda saved 5 bucks and not bothered putting a filter on at all.
Phil's dead on. Using a good quality filter is as important as using a quality oil

Royal Purple makes some good oil. Why splurge on that and go cheap on the filter?

I thought $20 on a filter was expensive lol. And I didnt splurge on the oil, it was $8/L. Oh well, live and learn I guess.. first oil change Ive done on it. Then again who knows, maybe it wasnt a fram filter but was in a fram box... my friend did it at his shop.

If you paid $20 for a fram filter, then you shouldn't consider that guy your "friend". They're about $5 at Partsource. A Bosch is $11 or so for the E30.
Maybe you read the bill wrong lol?

Even the OEM Mann or Mahle are about $9 for the drop in Cartridge type.

That's actually what CAPS charged them for the filter. They were all surprised at the cost because yeah usually they're like $5 or whatever.

Must admit, Autopartsonlinecanada.com is very fast. I spoke the to sales rep on the phone to confirm my orders just yesterday and today I received my tracking number with delivery date of today!
Can anyone recommend a place to borrow/get a 36mm socket? I misplaced mine or left it at my parent's place. I recall being pretty expensive ...

Princess auto has them. Not the best quality, but I've had decent luck with their stuff. They're on Ages drive.

Hey, they've changed their site.. I like! They didn't use to have parts online, you had to download the PDF catalog.

FYI, I just got an oil change done at Duss brothers on my new-to-me 2004 X3 3.0. They charged me $18 for a Mahle oil filter. I'll be buying mine online from now on!!

Completed my first ever oil change with the MityVac. The process is definitely easier but takes longer. Thanks everyone for their help!
