"loose" shifter

I have a 97 3 series, and there is a alot of lateral play in the shifter. almost as if the tranny shifts sloppy i replaced the old rubber bushing for new urethane ones but there is still lot of play in the shifter, less then before , but its still there. any ideas? thankss

could the bolts be worn?

where did you buy the bushings?

Hey Im glad you posted this question because i have a 1993 3 series and i have the same exact problem, and i cant quite figure it out. I thought maybe it would be the transmission but its hard to say, I havent tried to change anything yet.

i bought the bushings from tms, i think i found the answers to my problem or anyone else experiencing "sloppy shifts" with this link,

shifter bushing ALWAYS!

I think I've had 14 bmw's in 4 years.
2 IX's -sold and parts
2 325i 4 dr - sold
4 318is all white - sold and parts
1 87 325is red - parts
1 89 325i vert grey - parts
1 90 325is white - keepin
1 87 325i vert -red - keepin
latest addition 1 88-325is red - parts
latest addition 1 89-325i vert - white -fixin/sold
latest addition 1 92-318i vert - blue - parts
latest addition 1 87 325is blk - parts.

latest addition as of 2013-Gold 87-325is auto! it's a keeper!

Most likly the bushing around the ball at the base of your shrifter.
While your changing it might as well change them all below the car as well, it's only about 20 bucks for all of them including the ruber at the stealers.
A time consuming job.
