pretty sure on e36 you can't run a 9" rim on the back without a high (is this right?) offset.

With e39 tires you will have to run skinny tires. That is, 215s or 205s. BTW the proper tire size is 235/40/17 not 45...

I have the staggered 18" E38 ones on my car.
We pulled (flared) the rear fenders for clearance. It was the only way, as the RIM was rubbing. With how severe that was, I'm not sure that the 1" smaller diameter is going to prevent you from having to do the same.

The rear is only about .5" lower than stock. But I have a '95 US Spec M3, my stock rear is a lot lower than yours.
The rear fenders are pulled out pretty severely, basically the factory quarter edge angles down to 90 degrees flat towards the ground, while mine continues the outward slope of the higher part. Probably a 10-15mm difference at the bottom of the fender edge. 215/35/18 tires.

^ As Jay said.
I have 8" wide style 5s in 17". they need 205 40r17 to clear with no fender pulling or rolling. Thats a super skinny tire for our roads. I am going to try 215s next year.

^^ 205's are not super skinny, they are just as skinny as the stock 205/60/15... But then again I'd much rather get real style 5s in the proper e36 offset, and run 235/40/17

205 40r17 on a 8inch wide rim is super skinny.

i have 205 40r17. My car is lowered. The tire is too skinny!!!
You need minimum 215s, sorry. Also, 205s have crappy stability, too thin.
I suggest you get 215s with all the holes on our roads.

I've got 16" E39(ET20) Style 29's on my E36 with 205's, and they rub, even with a slight fender roll! But they look good Bilstein PSS Coilovers at their max height.
