OP, the C4S is a good car, but its unreliable. The 996 had plenty of engine issues, like I mean plenty of issues, especially the 99-02 years from RMS to IMS. Even 02-04 wasn't perfect, they fixed some things... but still, I'd get a 996 GT3 if you can afford it or a Turbo 996, because believe it or not, they are more reliable than a 996 Carrera 911. Get the GT1 derived motor ala GT3/TT. There is a reason there is a price disparity between them and the "regular" Carrera's.

great site, this page itself is awesome to browse and see the issues of the 996 Porsche's.

Thanks for the link! I am a member on there already... but in all honesty i'm really willing to deal with the troubles of a 02-04 996 c4s. I like the car to much!

Everything that comes out of your mouth is 100% bullshit, why do you even trying advising anyone when you know yourself, you're full of shit?! lol
You have never driven nor owned any of these cars! So wtf are you saying? Going by hearsay from what you read on your interweb again won't make you sound any more intelligent when you clearly have no experience with any car other than your Honda, and Ford pickup truck.
You're so dumb its not even funny anymore! I almost feel bad pointing it out!.... actually no I don't feel bad.

Oh boy... Mark the wannabe baller, the biggest clown in Toronto, puts in his two cents. From this little spiel you posted, we can all see your lack of intellect. The 996 Carrera isn't reliable. The engine has some serious design flaws.
Don't just believe me, believe engineers and Porsche specialists.
"First, it’s important to point out that it is the early 3.4-
litre engines, made from 1998 to 2000, that are most
susceptible to major failure. The later 3.6-litre engine is
pretty much problem-free. Also, Porsche made many
changes to the 3.4-litre unit over its production life, so the
last of these smaller-capacity engines – made in 2001 –
tend to be more reliable.
All 996 engines have an intermediate shaft that runs
the length of the underside of the block and is chain-
driven from the crankshaft. This, in turn, drives the twin
camshafts on each bank of cylinders. At the end of this is
a sprocket which turns on a bearing. The sprocket is
retained by a small stud that can break, causing the
bearing to fail. At first, this manifests itself as a noisy
rattle, which turns into a death rattle as the cam chains
come off, leading to further internal damage. etc etc"

anyways, point made, proven, done deal. Hearsay? Interweb reading? you're a joke. I've driven this car extensively and I've tracked a 996 GT3. I'm a Porsche fan, and while I love this car, early 996's had engine problems. I know someone who recently had a 996 C4S and now owns a 997TT, and he replaced his engine with only 44k miles. Mark, how's your 3 series treating you? hahahaha

Hey Tyler, Mississauga's own biggest Douchebag of them all!
This coming from a 20 Y/O broke student whom is a car jockey for Dixie Automall who clearly does not OWN ANY CAR AT THIS POINT IN TIME, nor has yet to own or even drive a real Porsche (Your BS stories don't count)... Whom insists every 1999-2001 Porsche 911 has had/ or will have engine failure due to a serious design flaw he read about on the internet forums, from maybe 5 or 6 people who took the time to complain about it. You're really a tool to believe that Porsche never took care of this problem with a service bulletin/recall to remedy this issue. Even early E46 BMW M3's had engine isssues, and BMW put through a huge recall, and most of those early cars are still running strong with no issues. Anything can be fixed once the problem is made known whether its replacement of parts or simple fixes especially if the Manufacturer steps in.
Posting links from forums of a few actual owners doesn't count as being informed kid. You should learn that. Don't feel so special some fool actually let an inexperienced 20 y/o punk like yourself drive a 996 GT3. You probably meant you drove one on the track in a VIDEO GAME! ahh I see. Video games don't count Tyler... Its nothing special, and neither are you... And you're not that lucky. Like I said, I don't believe your bullshit stories, nor does anyone else here.
And which 3 series BMW are you referring to? I own 3 of them currently (E46's and E90), + an M3 vert, and a 650i vert.
You must be jealous of my shitboxes since you still DO NOT OWN any car, and you lost the US/CDN dollar bet, and I gave away your 1990 Civic hatchback I was saving just for you to a person who CAN drive. Video games don't count kid as I keep telling you.
Haha, what can you get? you mean you can get jack shit! You're a car jockey/summer lot boy/lacky for Dixie automall

It's a huge issue. In fact, Porsche had lawsuits filed against them, because they didn't do a huge recall on the 996 until too late!
http://www.914club.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=106165
see the link above. There isn't a 'simple fix' for these engines, most of these are serious issues basically because of design flaws.
again, read page 2 of here thoroughly.

"Cylinder liners can also crack, and this is something
that Autofarm has investigated in detail. The 996 engine
is quite different to those in earlier 911s, in that the
cylinder liners are cast into the two halves of the engine
block. They are made of a very hard, carbon-heavy
material called Lokasil, and are positioned in the cast and
then surrounded by molten aluminium. When the casting
cools, the liners become an integral part of the block.
Unfortunately, cracks can appear in the lining and its
surrounding aluminium. “It appears to be an issue with
the block’s torsional rigidity,” claims Nick. “All engines
twist to some extent,” he explains. “And the harder you
work them, the more they tend to distort. It’s like the wing
of an aeroplane – it visibly moves up and down as the
aircraft passes through turbulence, but if it didn’t flex it
would simply snap.”
Nine times out of ten, it’s one of the centre cylinders – two or five – and it’s always the lower edge that fails; two parallel cracks appear about 30mm across. In the worst scenario, a ‘D’ shaped chunk of liner breaks off
between these crack" etc etc
Honestly douchebag, if someone is looking at a 996 911, who would someone believe, Mr. Wannabe BMW baller who thinks he knows it all, or a Porsche specialist and mechanic and thousands of recalled engines and people who have had issues with their 996's 3.4L engine? This is again why I question your intelligence, I'm sorry I don't understand why you are still posting.
I really couldn't care what you drive, except that they are pretty shitty, because you own them, and you're worthless. You don't know what I drive, or what I do, haha so keep on with your 20 year old lot jockey lawl's LOLOL. Oh btw, I won that bet on the US-Canadian dollar dipshit, in February I made the bet when it was 80 cents and it was a high of 96 or 97 cents in August, which like I said, would make it close to par. Where's my Civic? I'll import your Lambo anytime, you know, the one you wish you could afford.

There you go again twisting everything you hear and read. The bet was if the CAD would be worth equal... $1 USD = $1 CAD. Not close to it... Close but you still lost, and no cigar for you, in this case no 1989 Civic/car for you! Keep enjoying public transit, and mommy/daddy picking you up, and dropping you off.
You don't know where to begin or have any knowledge or money to import any car let alone a real Lamborghini... When I've already bought and sold three local CDN Lambo's with my investor at $250K a pop, since MAY 2009. When you haven't even been able to drule on one in person, let alone drive one. So keep talking shit about my bankroll while laugh all the way to the bank; and I enjoy my huge profits, and my vacation home on the beach in Florida, instead letting you brag about what cars I own, or have had in my possession. Frankly I could careless about what a broke 20 y/o student like yourself has to say about anything to do with me. I'll always have the last laugh at you!
Why are you still talking? You're stupid to believe Porsche hasn't recalled every single problematic 996 and made the proper revisions! Just 2 months ago I bought a 2000 911 C2 with 265,000km's, all original, and still running strong/problem free and sold it to a good customer of ours, and he's still raving about how good it runs and how happy he is! SO STFU with your internet research, because talking about a problem you read about on the internet, and actually owning the car and may/may not ever really experiencing the problem are two totally different things! And you're a Tool to think otherwise.
Spew crap out of your big punk mouth all you'd like, I'm not the idiot who professes to know more than anyone about Porsches/ and any car for that matter, yet 1. you have never nor probably ever will own any Porsche, 2. You're on a BMW forum and don't own a BMW or Porsche, NOR ANY Car for that matter, So how do you think anyone will ever believe the crap you spew out of your mouth from unsubstantiated information you picked up from a google search. It was truly a sad day you when someone taught you how to use Google let alone the Internet; Curse the day when your mother decided to let you off your leash and pay for your internet access!
Better be careful, the Net Police are trailing on your ass (just the way you like it)

I def noticed it... but that's their problem. I don't care about hijacking threads or anything like that. I don't take things to personal around here.
All in all i like this forum a lot! a lot of good help/info. I even took soom advice from here for investing. I bought a house strictly for business purposes. The only thing i can't wait for is next spring. New car...
