Not quite what he's looking for - more a gamers machine is what he wants.

And I guess you should go home - IBM no longer produces notebooks! It's Lenovo *tounge in cheek*

Just playin' with ya...

Also - The x61 is dated - if you are going thin and light, this is the bad boy you want...

i used IBM R series laptops while at sheridan college a few years ago, and i must say, i have not used anything stronger or more reliable since. acer, hp, toshiba, dell, all inferior to the IBM.

boss' son at work just got a w500 series from lenovo. this thing is a beast for design programs.

The W series is consider "workstation" or desktop replacement. you should see some of the W700's we have - they have a pop out screen on the side for more workspace, wacom tablet built in, 2 hard drives for raid capability, etc ,etc... Just NUTS...

Also expensive as hell... Fully loaded top of the line W700 is about $6K.

gamers machine + laptop does not compute

And the link I put was just a quick example. I didn't even really look @ the thing... but also, for arguments sake... Thinkpads were always made by Lenovo even when they were branded as IBM's AFAIK

Ahhh No - not true at all.

Lenovo had nothing to do with IBM prior to the purchase of their PC division.

Hmmm... Maybe for the really old IBM Thinkpads.. but I'm almost positive they were already making Thinkpads still branded as IBM for a while before going to the Lenovo name.

In 2005 after they signed the agreement to buy IBM's PC Division, they started to manufacture them under IBM name for 1 year as part of the agreement to transition names. Legend Holdings (Lenovo's parent company) is China's largest PC manufacturer and was looking for a way into the world market - this was it.

Lenovo did not manufacture IBM pc products for them through any agreement before it was sold to Lenovo.

Not quite the same thing you are talking about...

We are a large, world wide partner with IBM with ties to many of the world wide executives (4 of whom left IBM to work for us). I've got some insight into this...

Remember - your statement was "Thinkpads were always made by Lenovo even when they were branded as IBM's AFAIK" - they were not always made by Lenovo, only for 1 year.

Buy yourself a small laptop. Any laptop with a screen over 12.5 inches or so is retarded. Small, light, battery life. In that order. You dont need 4 gigs of fsb 1066 ram in a laptop, what the hell for?

i have a D620 latitude dell, 12.1 inch screen, 2gigs of fsb800 ram, 1.83 ghz p4 mobile, extended primary battery + modular battery. lasts about 8 hours and weighs 11 pounds (heavy, but for a dual battery laptop, its good. Laptop will work with either battery removed)

edit: And can be purchased for around 150$, 200-250$ including extended batteries + additional modular battery.
