I went to almost every race with them last year. It'll probably be less this year as I hope to start racing myself.
When in the garage/paddock, my responsibilities usually include tires/wheels, changing brake pads/rotors, minor repairs, setting up the fuel rig in the pits, filling up the cars... During practice I will take tire pressures and temps. During the race I am the fuel guy.
We can be away for as long as a week or 3-4 days, depending on how far the track is.
Expenses are covered.
Most of the time it's very hard work, but I love it. For the second year in a row I got to watch 24 hours of Daytona from ANYWHERE I wanted, including the pits. You get to meet a lot of interesting racing people, shoot the shit with some very famous drivers... pretty cool stuff.
I'll sure have some stories for the grandkids
