Its most likely an accumulation of moisture in the oil if you tend to do short trips. This in not allowing engine to reach operating temps and the moisture in the oil cannot evaporate and get out through the pcv. With time, moisture accumulates and when there's enough of it in there, oil can turn to sludge. You can change your driving habits or change your oil more often to remedy to this. This problem tends to only appear in the winter time.
This is what I've been figuring. I know I have a little gunk in my coolant but I'm also sure its just from WaterWetter. It tends to do that. I think if it were a headgasket I'd know for sure.
But I took it for a huuuge drive today. Went through half a tank on the highway. So I'll check it out tomorrow and I bet it's all cleared up.
I better stop the short journeys.
