I've got my eye on an 5er because I may need 3 car seats....can't do that in my 325!
Well, I'm not even sure I can fit 3 wide but I'm hoping I can. It's either that or my daily driver becomes the minivan. yuck.

okey dokey but you'll have to fight my little brother for it. Don't worry, he's only 6ft and maybe 160lbs wet...

All I can say is make sure you get a really thorough Pre-purchase inspection. an unmaintained 540 will nickel and dime you to death. Don't let a cheap purchase price fool you.
Get one with a good service history. If the entire cooling system hasn't been replaced within the last few years, replace the whole thing as soon as you buy it.
Expect a set of rear tires a season, and $100+ oil changes.
I'm not trying to scare you away, because I love 540's. but I don't want you to be surprised when you find that this isn't a super cheap daily driver.
If you're interested, I can give you a breakdown of my service history, which might give you a better idea.

Thanks big C. Yeah, I'm not expecting average maintenance costs. I think we talked about the usual suspects at M&M that one night. I figure it's a lot like my E36 only on a much bigger scale. I keep reading about thrust bushings, cooling systems, MAF issues, carbon build up, dead pixels...
I might take you up on that service history when the time comes, won't be until late next summer. Waiting on the van lease to be up, then I 'll figure out what my wife wants as a DD. I may end up swapping all 3 vehicles for 2 decent used ones.
I'm obsessing since I can't drive my car.
