Complete info on E39???

I'm interested in buying a 2003 E39 530. It is easier said than done...so I'm thinking I could expand my horizons and have a look at any of the E39 model years.
Is there a resource that could give me a comparison of the different model years. (options, engine ratings and general feedback...gems vs the duds?)

As an example...is the 530 engine the best choice compared to a 528 or 540 for fuel economy and horsepower?

Thanks Dan

Wikipedia is great too under the E39 section.

Fuel economy is really relative. What shook me up is that Top Gear episode where they 'raced' a Legacy, Polo and XJ6...
