unlocking cellphones

Hey!

Can anyone explain to me the process of unlocking a cell phone? I was thinking of finding a Blackberry Pearl to put onto my Bell contract; and saw a bunch of "unlocked" phones for sale. I'm just wondering how it works; and how you can call your provider & activate a phone with an ESN# from another provider?

Any help would be appreciated! ( and if anyone has a pearl for sale cheap that I can activate on Bell; PM me!! )

Those unlocked phones are only for fido/rogers or gsm providers. Bell is CDMA and you could only use bell CDMA phones.
