Wierd noise on start-up
Hi.I have a 1994 318is. It does a wierd sound when I start it up. Sortha "valvish" noise but after a minute or 2 it stops.It is starting to worry me alot.

My 92 318is made weird noises during cold weather starts. That might not be the case here.

Indeed my car makes the noise when it is cold. if I stop the car when it's hot and start it back up it does not make the noise

hydrolic lifters, nothing to worry about it's normal for M42's.
Can replace all 16 of them, but will cost alot and only thing you'll notice is less noise and a lighter wallet.
Could just switch to a thiker synthetic oil as well, that will help.

The engine does not make a lifter sound I know wath a loose lifter sounds like and thats not it
Anybody know about Timming chain tensioner probleme on them ????

could be the air pump starting to go, if its a low humming/buzzing sound that goes away after a few mins when the car is warm

Yes, it will sound alot like a diesel (but quiter) if it needs to be replaced.
And 318's do not have air pumps lik 32*+ e36's.

didnt know that, never mind then, pretty stupid of me considering I used to own a 318 should have payed more attention to what was under the hood lol

Is it true that I can use a M44 tensioner in a M42 engine as an upgrade???

Yes, tell you the truth I do not think you can even buy the old style M42 tensioner anymore.
