If it makes you feel any better, my M5 doesn't have a subwoofer and it doesn't sound all that great. Don't know if it just didn't come with it or one of the previous owners removed it/them.

again, unlike you and I who bought our e39s well used, high income middle aged buyers of brand new 5 series don't car how well a car handles the bass of dance music. it was catered to the mid range that's filled by vocals and musical instruments. that's why you guys think the sound system is shit. i liked the bass as long as I wasn't playing my dance at full volume. i was afraid of blowing my speakers

I agree, I listen to a lot of classic and jazz, and the e39 was very defined, good staging. It just lacks low end for rock / rap / dance. If you have the factory subs, just run an amp of the speaker leads and throw a sub in there. Stupid easy solution and cheap. And don't listen to anyone who says the quality will suck because its from speaker line; stepped down to line level the quality is fine, the noise is irrelevant since you can't hear it in a sub and the factory sub amp channels will distort less since they have very little load.

The biggest problem is hearing that sub through the 5" of sound material in the trunk. Perhaps a port into the cabin via the rear deck lid, like the factory subs.

I installed the BSW 12 inch deck mounted sub and amp and the sound is awesome! It bolts right up to the underside of the rear parcel shelf and doesn't take up too much trunk space. Finally well balanced bass. pics are on my site

That looks great, and to me would be the ideal system for an e39.

i have a stock subwoofer in my e39 and it bumped really nicely, but i just had 2 kaption spl's installed in the trunk and had it hooked up to the stock deck with the stock interiour speakers. it sounds mint and crisp, and there is plenty of chest pounding bass..

like euro said.

The sound system is not designed for ghetto beats it is designed for music. And any audio professional or an audio enthusiast will agree that the e39 is pretty decent audio system... though the non dsp does lack a bit of bass. I personally do not listen to rap n such so its not a problem.
