Help! Car is almost stalling!!!!

Hey guys,

I finally got my new E30 plated and on the road on saturday. About half way through the day today i noticed a warning light flash on then off, but I never got a chance to see what one it was. When i got closer to my destination, the light came back on and it was the check engine light!! I pulled into the parking lot and left it running. I gave it a bit of gas and the light went out, but then the revs dropped below 500 and it sounded and flet as though it was going to stall, but then the revs jumped back up to the normal idle.

Anyone had this problem or something similar? My best guess is it is fuel or air related, but im not sure. Thoughts?

Phil.

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Check all the hoses around the intake for splits or disconnections.

Is this a 318 or a 325? Check your fuel pressure first. Don't guess.
Sounds like a fuel issue to me.

o2 wouldn't make the car stall or stumble. Fuel or air would though. Is the OP even reading this? What have you found?

Well so far the problem has gone away. The only thing i can conclude is the heat and humidity the other day had an affect. For now im gonna leave it till the light comes on again, then figure out what fault code it is.

What year / model is it? It may store the code if it's a mid 88+ model that you can recall with the stomp test.

If its past production month of April it should have a 173 ECU which can do the stomp test. Try it out and see.

Pre-04/88 production 88 model year have the 153 which is the bastard redhead stepchild of ECUs. It doesn't do the stomp test.

I don't have the exact procedure here; google it: e30 stomp test

it involves turning the key, hitting the gas pedal 5 times and the check engine light will flash codes
