Are you asking to swap for the 2.0 (N46B20 I4), 2.2 (M54B22 I6) engines or the 3.2 M engine (S54B32 I6)?

If you can find 2.0 or 2.2, you can probably swap it, but I'm guessing your looking for the M engine, which then you'll need a new 6 speed transmission as your 2.5 is 5 speed.

well, afaik you can bolt up a s52/m52/m54 to a s54 tranny, and vice versa, i dont see how it should matter.

Mechanically you're not going to have any problems. However the tranny you have is an auto tranny and thus the electronic integration with a different engine and a different ECU might present a problem. Especially since the S54 variants were not available with automatic transmissions. So the ECUs may not be able to talk to one another.
