I've always wondered the same thing after I removed my AC components. I think it may just be a different cover plate on the side of the air box. I could be wrong?

I also removed the AC along with the AC core in the blower box. I replaced the side cover with piece of plastic.
The main thing is that the blower box for non AC car could be smaller as there is no need for AC core chamber.

I have a 318i with a non-ac box in it. Much smaller box than on a/c equipped cars, and you can't remove the heater core without taking the dash out. Major pita. If you want pics I can probably get some...

Any photos of the box ?

My box was removed long time ago and now my car is nearing the assembly process.
