Maybe they made a mistake, it happens

I dont know why everyone is complaining on what type of bmw it is and why they couldnt get a better one. Who cares this is insignificant.

Guess what guys, odds are is that the plot of the movie isnt gonna matter to what model number this bmw is, or even if it is an auto or not. I really doubt that the movie will dedicate a half an hour segment to how they picked a slow bmw instead of a fast one. Why are you guys even complaining when it makes no significance to the movie.

I think alot of us are forgetting that these are MOVIE cars for a HOLLYWOOD movie.
They could use a BMW 316 for the shots because you never really see under the hood. During the editing session, the special effects team will add engine and exhaust sounds, speed up frames, cut shots shorter, etc to make the cars seem as fast as they're being portrayed as =)
in fact a lot of the cars in the original movie were the lower end models, and only in the scenes where you see the engine, they'd put the real deal in the shot.

djcontra is right

most of the speed doesnt come from the car, it comes from special effects. most and i think all of the cars are auto anyways, just so its easier to move around the set and stuff i guess. the supra was even auto too!
