Salt Stains

What's the best way to get those ugly white salt stains out of carpet\mats?
Will steam cleaning work, or is there some sort of chemical that is needed?

when i was working at queensway audi/vw to get salt stains off of new cars we use carpet cleaner and let it sit and sink into the salt stain. then add more carpet cleaner and just brush it and then vacuum dry
