ANSA mufflers supposedly have serious rust problems so I'd stay away, especially considering our climate.

Think of the y pipe into the single in as an X pipe. It actually helps flow and sound having an X pipe in place. Or something like that.

There is more to flow than an open hole in a pipe. The X pipe helps with pulse timing and back pressures due to waves in each pipe. Most factory systems include an H or X pipe, including my m50 powered 525i. At that range, with the 6 lowly exhaust valves in the m20, that far away from the motor, going into a single inlet would do nothing, especially when you consider it's a 2.25" inlet.

Also, the factory 1.75" pipes give 4.8 square inches of area to flow into, where as a single 2.25" gives 3.9 square inches of flow, so it's hardly even a reduction. If you had a 2.5" pipe you'd have an increase in total flow ability!
