bogging?

So today i went to drive my new e30 1987 325i and when i would accelerate in any gear it would only accelerate to about 1.5-2k then bog then again to 2k then bog then again to 2k. The engine looked to be warmed up and there was ALOT of smoke coming out the back. It also reved fine when in neutral. Then me and my brother kept the engine running while looking at the engine/reved it. Then the problem seemed to be fixed and it ran fine and it was NOT smoking heavily.

What could this of been? Does it need to warm up for longer? Did it just need to be "cleared out" by reving the engine?
