I spend about $3-4k/yr on my 97 540. That includes a set of tires and brake pads every year. I do a lot of driving. It was six years old when I bought it, about the age you're looking for now.

You can't go wrong with either the 530 or 540. As long as you don't expect Honda reliability or easiness on the wallet, you'll be very pleased with your purchase. Good luck!

E39 is by far my favorite BMW. I would love a 540 but my next car would be a 530 BECAUSE or that sick red (not sure exact name) color M-Package that the 540 doesn't come in...

edit: its either Imola red or Cherietto red...

One of my neighbour is trying to get rid of his 1999 540iT i dont know if im fond of it... he is asking very good price and has only 44500 kms +/- few hundred kms.

so i test drove both 540i and 530i e39 series.. i prefer the 530i so much more than 540i. 540i felt like a really fast tank.

whereas 530i felt like driving a smaller car which was not slow at all... pretty decent.

I am not really looking for a reall fast car or id be looking into m3/m5 i just want a decent saloon that is no slugmobile.

Its not meant to be an insult. but i dont understand the concept of a big v8 in a saloon. Unless you are 20 something looking for power i do not understand? The 530 for my preference handled very well and the 540 did not give me the awe factor.

If one was looking for an awe factor there are many other offerings besides the 540.

For my personal needs the 530i fits my demands.

cheers.

The prices of the 540 vs. 530 was not that much different. I had my eyes set on a non-CPO Sterling Grey 540i with a 6M. A quick look at gas prices, insurance rates (yes, the 540 means a higher premium) and the lower mileage 530i became a more sensible choice. I thought that I'd hate the Steptronic but I'm actually enjoying it. I put 3,500 kms during my 20-day vacation and purposely took some of the back roads. The trips were a little longer but nevertheless, I can't wipe the grin off my face. Still to this day, the best car I ever owned.

I think it all boils down to what you are looking for.

I had my eyes set on the 530i before i even drove both one after the other. After driving 540i vs 530i v sport package i had no regrets about picking 530i as my first choice.

The auto/steps go pretty quickly i actually PREFER manual so i am in luck as not many bmw buyers prefer manuals.

I am finding a lot of people purchase bmw for status value and not for its workmanship/performance/reliability combo.

Its that reason why we have higher premiums for it a stigma attached to it socially which dictates he who drives a bmw must be a very rich man/woman.
