E34 Unstable Suspension

I have a bit of a suspension issue with the 1990 535i. When going over bumpy or uneven roads, it gives me a "darting" feeling that i have to overcorrect in order to keep the car on the road.

Hard to explain i guess, but it's driving me nuts. Front end is tight, i just replaced the thrust arms. These made the car tighter, but the problem is still there. Shocks are origional with 300k on them, and the rear end sits too low, so I plan on putting another set of stock springs in it with newer shocks and struts, but im not sure this will cure my problem.

I've also replaced the rear subframe bushings and the steering box with a used one.

Any idea's?

Im not sure.. the car settles pretty quick after being bounced, and there are no clunks.. shocks seem OK?

Yes feels like tramlining. At higher speeds on uneven roads, the car wants to go everywhere and i have to overcorrect all the time.

Plan of attack is shocks/struts and an alignment again.

E34 unstable_Shocks

It sounds like your shocks have packed it in. If you do a "bounce test "on the E32/34 it will always settle quick even with bad shocks.

e30_kid89 is bang on, you will need shocks. There is a good selection of front and rear dampers out there in the market, depending on your budget.

Mark.

Sounds like rear steering to me.. pitman arms! They hold the rear end steady and wear quite regularly. Super easy to change and cheapish. Made a big difference on my car. bmwe34.net lists them as one of the most common things to go wrong.

everlast, when I had the car on the hoist after i origionally bought it, i had an eye on them, they didn't look in the best of shape. I think i'll go after those next. What'd they cost you and where'd you get them?

I got mine locally, but most places are about the same price, $80 per side:

autopartsonline canada

You can also try to get them from ebay.. most ppl moan about ebay stuff as sometimes you're not sure the brand, but 90% its TRW or Meyle. I've seen them for $50 USD for a pair on ebay!

Ya i like ebay stuff... i got my thrust arms for $150cdn to my door, both sides Meyle brand.

Hopefully those rear pitman links will do the trick.

I've had similar issues (a few times).

- rear subframe bushings
- rear shock mounts

You should replace the springs if you're sagging, the shocks if they're 300k, and do the RSM / dogbones (pitman arms) all at once. See how that goes, then do the subframe bushings if it is persistent.

I put subframe bushings in it.. i will be doing the rear pitman arms, shocks and springs and i guess ill have to look into the rear shock mounnts. Not sure how the shock mounts would be causing my wondering problem though?
