I usually don't like to reply to a question with a dead-end answer, but if "performance and power" is your main concern as you say it is, then try to find a 328 or a 325 at least. You'll be much more ahead of the game starting with a larger motor.

Agree 100%. Had one crashed it, best mod I ever made.

I agree with Bliss...

AND, even for small repairs, the 320i parts are VERY hard to find used, since nothing is the same as the 325/328. In most cases you need to go to the dealer, and you know the prices!

Performance wise, 150Hp from a 6cyl is a joke, even the E30 M20 makes more! Add to that the almost unexisting performance upgrades for the car, and you are left with nothing but engine swaps as an option! So might as well start off with something else!

Agree with the above.....the 325 and 328 will give you good power to start off with, and mods for them are widely available. Parts in general for maintenance and repairs will also be cheaper since you have a wider selection. If you are concerned about gas, go with the 325 since its a nice balance between power and fuel consumption, and parts and upgrades are very widely available.

I have an E46 320i; life sucks. Get the 325/328 like these guys said. These f**kin' Canadian spec 320is are nuts to find parts for since they're not sold in the USA (not sure if the E36 320i was in the same unlucky boat though since I don't know my E36s).
