Advice to sell or not to sell my car...

Hey guys, so last October i purchased a 2000 328I e46 and iv had an amazing time with it thus far. the problem is I'm going off to university in Ottawa next year and am having a large debate over whether or not ill be able to afford the car if/when trouble occurs. I'm getting it rust proofed this week for the winter but is that enough to ensure about 4 years out of my car?

iv narrowed it down to a few options.
1. keep the car keep paying high insurance, and do all preventive measures to ensure i can keep my beloved car!
2. sell the e46 for the est value of 16-18 k then buy a e36 for around 6-7 k and drop about 5 more k to ensure its life, followed by keeping 5k for myself.
3. sell the car and buy a winter car possibly an e30 or not a bmw for my university life but not have the luxury of driving these great machines!

I'm stuck with this decision and just seeking some input what do you guys think i should do?

Thanks in Advanced
Zidanne

My advice is to keep a car you can afford. When you're in university, you don't want to be worrying about your car and money etc... You gotta focus on school and you don't really need the distraction of worrying about finances.

Thats what I would do.

I'd sell the car and get myself a transit pass while studying at Ottawa U, or don't bring your car to Ottawa. If you live near University, then you are right in downtown.. Commute in downtown is very easy and fast. Plus, winter in Ottawa is pretty bad.. much much colder than here in GTA.

i wanted it to be a bmw, or possibly a nice vw/other german car. but im not all that picky if its a mind blowing difference to garentee myself 2-4 years out of it. to be honest iv only ever done research on bmw's; it took me 2-4 months to finally determine that the est reliability of a 2000 bmw was better then most others. which in turn resulted in me buying it, but i dont want to get stuck with a huge repair while going to school.

any inputs on other cars? Acura, mazda, audi, vw jsut throwing names out there...

I guess it all depends on your cash flow doesnt it? If you have the $$ then keep the thing, it shoudl prove reliable.

If you are tight for cash, instead of being car poor, dump it and get something cheaper to run.

Also your prices seem off, that car is worth more like $12 grand. 16-18 gets a nice e46 coupe these days.

Plus if you live near u of O (shitty university btw lol) u won' tneed a car - walk to grocery, clubs, restos, n uni
