Removing rear speakers

I got the front speakers out of my 96 318is , Now I want to change the back speakers under the rear deck lid? Do I have to remove the deck lid or do they come out of the bottom in the trunk?

pry off the speaker covers (grills) on your rear deck lid.
you will see the screws (philips) underneath on the corners. unscrew them, then go into your trunk and unclip the speaker box. it has to be removed by sliding to the side a bit. you'll see what I mean when you take the screws off.

If you have rear headrests and are finding it difficult getting to the screws, then pull the head rests straight up while wiggling back and forth. They'll slide right out.

what size are the rear speakers anyways? mine have been blown for 2 years now and i never got around replacing them.
and which ones should i be looking for? 2way? 3way? 1way?
cuz there is a separate tweeter right next to the speaker?

bimrboy - anytime.

MP328, it depends on which package you have, and what year your car is. But early model with Premium Package (10 speaker sound), which most of us have is:

front kick panel - 5.25"
front door tweeters - 1"
door mid - 3.5"
rear speakers - 4"
rear tweeters - 1"

you can fit a 5.25" in the rear deck with a custom box, or an aftermarket bracket. It's also possible to fit a 6x9 back there.

You are correct, you want a 1 way, since you already have a tweeter back there.. or you can get a 2-way and drill out the tweeter hole bigger to use as air pass through if your rear seats don't fold down. Will depend on which box you have... early model e36's came with a sealed box, later model e36's came with a baffle box.

no 6x9 in any car is aloud.You can put a 3 way kit the door and 4" coax for rear fill and call it a day......AVI has 2 3war kits and JL has 1 kit, I know there more cannt think of them right now....

DLS also makes a nice 3-Way set that fits the e36 models with premium sound (10-speakers). It's one of the only direct drop in 3-way sets currently on the market for e36 models. I've been looking at their UP35 or UR35 models.

mine is a 97 328i . i think its the 10 speaker system. i'll prolly just stick with a 4" 1way if thats the size, and replace them. but im not sure what the box is underneath. i tried it once before to pull one of them out by loosening the top 2 screws but i just couldnt get the thing out. so i gave up before i broke something.
